Adam Dean and the Beijing Subway

13 October 2014

Nobody likes getting stuck in traffic, and no one enjoys being stuck in a cramped space with a myriad of fellow passengers. But in Beijing, this is a daily fact of life.

Photographer Adam Dean captured the flow of one of the most sustainable transportation systems in the world in our opening story for #FutureofCities. The Beijing mass transit system is one that has assisted over 9 million people with their daily commute. The vast spread of track is the second largest metro system in the world.

Adam’s images show the crowds and congestion of Beijing's metro as well as its stark efficiency. While Adam typically cycles around Beijing rather than taking the subway, this project showed him another view of the city in which he resides. The subway draws people from all walks of life and this project reveals the struggle of a city trying to cope with expanding populations and the need to keep people moving.
